Thanks to our participants for another enjoyable evening of Lifewriting and storytelling! And a BIG thank you to guest speaker Pauline Tolan for sharing her career insights and stories from her professional life. 🙂 Below is a summary of the evening.
With the New Year upon us, many of us are considering career moves or changes. This EmpowerWriting Tuesdays Evening Workshop focused on our professional goals. Special guest Pauline Tolan shared her favourite stories – and her top personal and professional lessons – from her 20-year career as a sales manager for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals (Canada). Pauline shared her thoughts on some of the benefits of working for a big company with excellent perks, such as opportunities to travel and to meet intriguing personalities like Guy Lafleur, of hockey fame, who promoted Men’s Health and Pfizer’s Viagra. Closer to her heart, Pauline spoke on the Aricept drug for Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia that her company had trouble getting BC government coverage for; sales reps would try to do their part by leaving extra samples behind. She expressed that many peoples’/families’ life choices are made based on coverage of medicines (and what they can and cannot afford to pay for).
Following Pauline’s talk, our free-writing and storytelling session was on Kick-starting one’s career in the New Year. Participants wrote about the professional change they want to create for themselves in the New Year and the steps they are planning to take towards reaching their goal. With a diverse group – ranging from university students to young professors to recent retirees – there was, predictably, a wide-range of career goals and challenges amongst participants. One Lifewriter, Johanne, had recently packed up all her belongings, left behind her stable federal public service career and family out East, and drove across the country in her van. She shared with the group her professional challenge for 2019: to fulfill her calling, to be doing something more in tune with her multi-dimensional ‘self’ that supports her “heart, soul, and wallet.”
EmpowerWriting Tuesdays is an inclusive space to help you grow as a writer and individual. Hosted monthly, we get together to free-write on topics close to ourselves, discuss current events in our lives, and share our stories with a supportive community.
